The hazard perception test was introduced to assess your driving awareness skills and forms part of the theory test. The hazard perception element of the test comprises of 14 video clips, each 1 minute long. During these clips, you will see a normal road situation, in which a hazardous event will unfold and as soon as you see the hazard develop, you will need to click the mouse.
This part of the test is designed to test your ability to react quickly to what you see, so the quicker you spot the hazard, the more points you score. Each clip, therefore, has a time window and you may need to click the mouse more than once to ensure that you have registered a click inside the time window. If you click the mouse outside of the time window then you will score 0 points for that clip. You will also be penalised for over clicking on any one clip, and you will also receive a score of 0 for that clip. One of the clips, however, has 2 hazards in it and so you will need to keep on your guard to make sure you spot both hazards in the clip and click accordingly. Overall, you need to score at least 44 out of a possible 75 to pass this section of the theory test.
You must pass both elements of the test in order to pass your theory test overall. The best way to practice driving awareness skills is when you´re actually driving on a lesson or sitting as a passenger in a car. Think about how other people´s actions will affect you and how your actions will affect them. Try to spot potential hazards early, look further down the road to see what is happening ahead and widen your vision by looking at the pavements and side roads so that you can see any potential dangers early. At The Hub you can also practice hazard perception clips for FREE.
